How can I help you?

What is mindfulness?

The term mindfulness means focusing attention and awareness in a non-judgmental way. It is a mind-body approach that can really help you to change the way that you think and feel about your experiences and can make a difference to your health.

Regular, sustained mindfulness practice can help us to become more aware in our daily lives. It can help us to change the way that we look at things, enabling us to access new skills to cope more easily with everyday pressures.

Research has shown that people committing to a daily mindfulness practice can experience improved concentration, better emotion regulation, enhanced brain function and an improved immune system.

Mindfulness Courses:

Mindfulness can help us to move from living life on autopilot to responding to life's ups and downs with choice and awareness. We learn to use the body and breath to calm and settle us. Activities include meditation when sitting down, body awareness practices while lying down and gentle movement with awareness. All activites can be done in a chair if you prefer. There is no religious or spiritual content.

The Alexander Technique

Alexander TechniquThe Alexander Technique is a practical method to help you to change unhelpful patterns of tension in the body which can lead to pain and strain. Have you ever noticed your posture while working at a computer? The Alexander Technique can help you to stop and recognise what you are doing, so that you can make a mindful choice about what you do next. Many people come for lessons to improve their posture and to help them to reduce pain. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines now recommends the Alexander Technique for relieving lower back pain. It can enable you to learn new ways to move and live your life with greater freedom and ease.

It is often used to help sciatica, neck pain, shoulder pain, pregnancy pain and to support people with Parkinson’s disease. As the technique involves learning how to let go of unhelpful patterns of tension in the body, it can be beneficial for stress relief and building self-confidence. This technique is often used by professionals to enhance their business, sport, musical or stage performance and simply just to help people to relax.

Clinical research on the use of Alexander Technique lessons to improve chronic lower back pain

Randomised controlled trial of Alexander technique lessons, exercise, and massage (ATEAM) for chronic and recurrent back pain. A series of 24 lessons in the Alexander technique taught by registered teachers provides long term benefits for patients with chronic or recurrent low back pain. Both six lessons in the Alexander technique and general practitioner prescription for aerobic exercise with structured behavioural counselling by a practice nurse were helpful in the long term; classic massage provided short term benefit. Six lessons in the Alexander technique followed by exercise prescription was almost as effective as 24 lessons. http://www.bmj.com/content/337/bmj.a884
